Early Nutri-Score Advocates for Public Health

A simple, science-backed way to compare food quality in grocery stores at a single glance, without barriers.

The Pioneer 5-Color System

When the "5-color nutrition system" was first proposed in a 2014 French scientific report, Open Food Facts asked Prof. Serge Hercberg for the formula. We immediately computed the grades across all 10,000 French products in our database overnight, demonstrating that automated, objective front-of-pack scoring was achievable at scale without waiting years.

Research Partnership
Prof. Serge Hercberg and the EREN research team

Collaborating with the EREN Research Team

Open Food Facts worked closely with the public epidemiological research team EREN (Inserm / INRAE / CNAM / Université Sorbonne Paris Nord) led by Prof. Serge Hercberg and Dr. Chantal Julia. We shared field data, validated score calculations against scientific criteria, and supported academic studies on dietary quality and public health.

Citizen Action

Universal & Mandatory Nutri-Score

In an ideal world, consumers should not need a mobile app to understand their food; clear nutrition ratings should be printed right on front packaging. Open Food Facts actively backed the European Citizens' Initiative (#ProNutriScore) alongside consumer unions across 7 EU nations to advocate for mandatory front-of-pack labeling.

Innovation & Scale

Cutting-Edge Technology to Support the Nutri-Score

Building open-source algorithms, AI vision networks, and producer tools to break down adoption barriers.

Mobile Pioneer

First Mobile App to Display Nutri-Score

The Open Food Facts app for iPhone and Android was the very first mobile app to compute and display the Nutri-Score on barcode scans. Since 2014, it has empowered over 15 million citizens to decode supermarket shelves and compare nutritional quality in real time.

Computer Vision
Nutri-Score AI vision neural network

Computer Vision & AI Recognition

Our neural networks (RoboFlow & custom vision models) automatically scan millions of crowdsourced product photos, detecting Nutri-Score badges whether they appear in color, grayscale, tilted, or partially shaded, while extracting the exact letter rating to verify pack consistency.
